Printing Tips to Help You Get More From Your Home Printer

Your home printer is an important investment that you will want to last as long as possible. Even a fairly basic printer can last you many years if you look after it properly, so make sure that you take care of your printer and it will continue to produce excellent results for a long time. Here are some tips to make sure you get the most from your printer over the years.
Save on Ink
If you want to save money when you print products then it makes sense to find cheap ink cartridges because these will save you money instantly on your printing. If you pay too much for your cartridges then you may be wasting your money, so try to find a more cost-effective solution.
But even after you have bought cheap ink cartridges, make sure that you get the most out of them so that the ink lasts longer. This means only printing using draft quality for unimportant documents because this uses less ink. You could even change the type of font to save ink. Use something like Garamond and you will save on the amount of ink being used.

The Hidden Dangers of Adware

Adware in the purest sense of the word is not a dangerous thing, designed only to display targeted advertising to you while browsing the internet. It was originally developed by marketers to be non intrusive and use very little system resources. You can easily recognize adware by the display of pop up advertisements on your computer screen, often appearing when you perform searches or land on different websites.
Adware can be very annoying, and in the past few years much of adware's functional characteristics have begun to resemble spyware. A large percentage of adware today includes code that tells the advertiser something about you. It often relays information about which sites you visit on the internet, how much time you spend on each site, and what type of content you viewed. Although marketing people consider this information to be harmless to you, most users consider this type of data gathering to be an invasion of privacy. Adware that is delivered in the form of email often tells marketers when you opened the mail, how long you looked at it, and what you did with it.

How to Avoid Getting Spyware from Internet

Many web surfers have given up and just learned to live with spyware. While spyware might not be particularly harmful to your computer it will still eat up your memory over time, requiring you to do frequent reboots. In addition, it may hit you with a barrage of annoying popups, advertising anything from erectile dysfunction products to the latest diet fad. Email is another popular infection route that spyware distributors take advantage of. Many computer users just accept having a malware-infested pc as a cost of doing business on the internet these days. This need not be the case if you follow these simple steps:
• Be cautious with email
• Consider using filtering software
• Use antivirus and antispyware programs
• Make sure your operating system stays updated

Choose the Best Anti-Spyware

The Sophistication In Malware

Malware writers tend to write for systems that are the mostly widely used. Malware writers recently began adopting these methods on a large scale to help lure users to open messages and click on attachments. That's why the malware terminology has evolved from basic Trojans, virus and spywares to crimewares, krugueware and so on
Malware
The main concept of scanners is to protect a system by catching malwares with signature database: they block only what they know. However, the experts in safety estimate that the authors of malwares constantly accentuate their efforts to encrust themselves in the mobile peripherals. Threats and Malwares are becoming more and more sophisticated. Another worrying trend is that many of these spy malwares also include multiple destructive capabilities. Installing and updating antivirus software which monitors communications and prevents unauthorized programs from being run remains the best form of protection against malwares.

Most Dangerous Types of Spyware: How to Choose Anti-Spyware

Bad News - the Threat is Bigger than it Seemed
How recently it was – when even many journalists thought that spyware gathers mostly information to be used for targeted advertising. Definitions like "spyware, a.k.a. adware, is…" were pretty common in articles. Keyloggers and system monitors were mentioned as dangerous, but relatively rare. Until the Spy Audit survey made by ISP Earthlink and Webroot Software clearly showed - they are not rare at all.
The results of the survey are here:
http://www.earthlink.net/spyaudit/press/ and [http://www.earthlink.net/about/press/pr_spyauditsurvey/]
Reading them will be time well-spent for everybody who uses Internet and at least sometimes deals with information valuable enough to be stolen; in fact, it means just everybody.
"Industry experts suggest that these types of programs [i.e. spyware in general] may reside on up to 90 percent of all Internet-connected computers" – that's the exact quote. Considering the number of computers scanned during this survey (which lasted for a whole year 2004), there is nothing left but to come to the conclusion – it must be true to fact.

5 Tips to Help You Choose the Right Laser Printer Scanner

In the past, a laser printer scanner was only used in the office, but more manufacturers are making ones suitable for home use since advancing technology allows them to be smaller and more affordable. Laser printer scanners are faster and have more functions than in the past, so whether you are looking for one for your home or your business, you have many to choose from. Here are a few things you may want to think about before making your purchase.
What functions besides scanning do you need? Most all-in-one, or multifunction printers, as they are called, also copy and fax. Well, only some fax and most copy. If you need to fax, look carefully to be sure the printer you are considering has a faxing function. When copying, some printers require a computer to be connected to them, and some can copy on their own. If copying often, it is much more convenient to have the latter option since it is faster and less headache.
Know what you need to print before looking for a printer. While scanners don't vary too much, printers do. Several factors should influence which printer you choose. Will you print in color or only in black and white? If you plan to print in color, the price of the laser printer increases significantly. And laser printers are known for not being able to print great photos and other graphics that need shading, so if you plan to print these types of documents, you many want to think about getting an inkjet multifunction printer instead.

Spyware Stats To Pay Attention To

In early 2005 Webroot Software released its State of Spyware Report which was conducted by Webroot and Earthlink. In the survey over 4.6 million computer systems were scanned during 2004 and the results have shown how threatening spyware has become.
It was suggested that more than 90 percent of all computers with internet connections are infected with spyware. During the first quarter of 2005 approximately 88 percent of systems scanned with Webroot's SpyAudit software had some sort of unwanted application detected.
On corporate computers over 55 percent of PCs had unwanted programs, excluding cookies because they are thought not to be as intrusive or detrimental. The corporate computers averaged 7.2 non-cookie spyware infections per computer.

How to Help Prevent Viruses and Spyware From Infecting Your Computer

1) EDUCATION and Common Sense must be used on the Internet. That's right - YOU have power to stop these infections dead in their tracks with no ifs, ands, or buts. If something doesn't feel right about what you see on the screen, don't do it!! Don't press the button.
2) ALWAYS keep Windows and your Anti-Malware software updated - it can't fight what it doesn't know! Only run ONE anti-virus software program. Multiple anti-spyware scanners may be used, however (like Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, for example).
3) Use a software firewall. Windows 7 comes with an adequate firewall that monitors incoming AND outgoing connections. The Windows firewall in Vista and XP are passable but do not monitor outgoing connections (like when spyware tries to "call home") Check out a free firewall like Comodo Firewall with antivirus - it's free and it works great. Again, only one anti-virus (and one firewall), okay?

What is Spyware?

Spyware is a general term for malware that is installed on a computer by infected pages on the Internet, or comes from software and other packages that was installed on the computer by the user. Incorrectly labeled as viruses, spyware has proliferated over the last 8-10 years (since about 2000) and has caused many computer users to have major headaches, causing computer reformats and file loss. This type of software is what this document is going to concentrate on.
Spyware can come in the form of Ad-ware, Hijackers, tracking cookies (although not all tracking cookies are bad), rogue security software, ransom-ware (an advanced rogue security software), and keyloggers. New types of spyware include rootkits which can be very difficult, if not impossible to remove from a computer system. I will speak more on that later. The primary point of spyware, however, is that it is a piece of software installed on a computer system without the user's consent or knowledge, and is typically very difficult (or seemingly difficult) to remove.

What is a virus?

A virus is a self-replicating piece of software which usually sends itself to other computers via email or the Internet. It does not require human intervention. Its purpose is to either replicate, cause computer damage, or both. It typically comes from infected emails or documents and can either do its damage right away, or be like a ticking time bomb waiting for the special day to activate.
Examples of viruses:
Boot viruses such as Michelangelo and Disk Killer load when the computer reads the disk. This type of virus is extremely difficult to get rid of.
Program viruses attach themselves to the executable programs on the computer and replicate themselves to all executables on the hard drive. Again, these are very difficult to remove. Examples include the Sunday Virus and Cascade Virus.

Windows 7 Gains Over Windows 8 and Vista Competition

Windows 8 is making a headway against Vista. However, both of them have no match with Windows 7. The most recent figures have shown that, in May, Windows 8 has a 4.27 percentage share of the PCs being installed worldwide versus the 4.51% for Vista. As you know, Vista is one of the least popular OSes introduced in November 2006. But then again, maybe they will be breaking out the sparkling wine soon. Still, Windows 7 leads a long shot at 44.85% and it truly made gains in May. It had 44.72% in April.
Newer Isn't Always Better
We need to understand the situation. According to Bill Gates, higher is better. Let's take a look at the reality. The Windows Me, the blue one has problems. The Windows 98 has issues. The Windows Vista could not transfer files over a network at rational speeds. Users were happy with Windows XP but it became out-dated. Now, this most recent version, which is Windows 8, has even more issues. This points out that newer is not always better. As what Bill Gates says, it's not practical to point out the best one, when the most recent has more issues. Without a doubt, people prefer Windows 7 because it has operated far better and has had lesser and more tolerable issues.

How a Home-Made 3D Printer Can Help You Make Anything

Star Trek, a landmark science fiction show, is considered to be one of the best shows of its genre ever aired on television. That is a fact that both fans and non-fans agree upon. It is not just the idea of humankind traveling to the outer regions of space that fascinated the viewers of Star Trek; there are just too many marvels that this television show allowed us to visualize for our future.
But since life tends to imitate art, there is one Star Trek "invention" that is slowly becoming reality for a number of geeks and techies across the world. That is none other than the replicating machine. This replicator allows anyone to create almost anything using the materials of his or her own choosing. The word "replicator" may seem too vague or out-of-this-world for the layman, but a more familiar term for that would be the 3D printer.
From Engineering Labs to the Home
These 3D printers used to be exclusive to engineering and mechanics laboratories. This is not surprising, given that 3D printers used to be unwieldy and complicated to use, not to mention horribly expensive. Even today, many engineering firms do not have their own 3D printing machines because the cost can be prohibitive.

Tips to Save Money on Your Printer's Ink Jet Cartridges

Do you do as much printing as I do?
Do you need a reliable source of cheap inkjet cartridges once a month?
Well that could get expensive...take it form someone who goes through that many inkjet cartridges.
DON'T MISS USE YOUR PRINTER -Keep it simple...
Don't Print Photographs on Your Ink Jet Printer
A picture says a thousand words... And that is exactly the reason you see the commercial on TV where they print out a picture and you don't know one of two things they are not showing you.
Don't be fooled. The ink they actually use is top quality expensive, the photo paper is way expensive, and you can probably get better quality at a lower cost at your local drug store, Costco, Walmart, etc.
Ounce for ounce, printer ink literally is the most expensive liquid on the planet forget oil!
It's often more expensive at times than gold even. So before you buy your next printer, check out the price of ink jet cartridge replacements.
You'll want to be especially careful if you're considering a very low cost ink jet printer.
Why? Because the printer manufacturer actually usually charges a very very high price for their replacement cartridges so beware.

How to Computer Running Very Fast and Super Efficient Internet Speed

After years of trials and tribulations, I've finally come up with a system to get my computer running very fast and efficiently. Here's how I do it, feel free to follow if you feel your computer and/or laptop (for the purpose of this article the term "Computer" stands for both) doesn't work as fast as you think its capable of given your RAM, CPU, Operating System, Hard Drive and Internet Connection. Many of these programs I've listed below, do the same or similar functions but I've found they get different results and I get the best results when I use them together in the order shown below. I do the following steps with the following software, every time I either reboot my computer, add or delete a program or if I feel the computer isn't working as fast as I think it should be:
1. I click on (TuneUp Utilities) 1 -Click Maintenance which quickly cleans up your registry and hard drive with one click. 1-Click Maintenance is part of this software and is the basic application I use from it.
2. I then use (Sammsoft) Advanced Registry Optimizer and click Scan and Fix Registry Now which further scans and fixes Errors
3. Then (PC Tools) Registry Mechanic and click Scan Your Registry which Deep Scans your registry for problems and corrects them.
4, I then repeat step one and use 1- Click Maintenance again
5. Finally, I use (Uniblue) Speed Up My PC which automatically optimizes your computer for maximum performance. It increases my broadband internet downloading speed greatly. This is a 2 step process involving a scan and optimization in the Overview (first page) section. I recommend you should also check Internet for Optimization all the time even if its blank.
I'd also recommend every time you add or delete a program you review what's checked on MSCONFIG if you have XP- I'm not sure what the equivalent is on Vista, and uncheck everything that isn't necessary at start-up, as the more items you have checked, the slower your computer performs. I only have 2 things checked on my computer, my anti-virus program and Google Web Accelerator. When you initially buy a computer, everything is checked for start-up. For those unfamilar with MSCONFIG, just put MSCONFIG on Run, click it and see what's checked on the furthest tab on the right marked "Startup" and delete the items checked that you don't feel are necessary during Start-Up. As noted above, I only have 2 items checked.
I also use (Webroot)Window Washer which deletes my Internet Cache (including Firefox) as well as other items, at least once a day and if I feel like the internet is running a tad slow.

The Top 3 Rated Free Antivirus Software

There are many people who wouldn't consider downloading free antivirus software. And that's because they're cynical about antivirus vendors who develop these free programs; and believe they use them as marketing gimmicks to hook people into purchasing full antivirus software. Whether these claims are true or not, free antivirus software plays an important part in the security software realm.
On the other hand, there are many free antivirus and antispyware programs that are developed by cybercrooks. And these rogueware (rogue security software) programs are designed to fleece unsuspecting users. They masquerade as genuine security software programs and on the surface appear to scan your PC and find malware. But the reality is they are Trojan and malware threats and carry with them spy software that steals your personal information for all kinds of nefarious activities.
To outmanoeuvre these malware threats and protect your PC from all kinds of cyber threats, you need to be acquainted with the top rated free antivirus software programs. There are many good ones to choose from, but we've found 3 that have the best features and tools.
So here is our list of the top 3 rated free antivirus programs:
AVG
AVG Antivirus is one of the most downloaded free antivirus programs. It has a track record of providing excellent protection from all kinds of malware threats. And its full version is one of the top 10 antivirus programs.
Unlike some of its competitors, AVG Antivirus is a complete version and not some watered-down version. This is one of the reasons it's so popular and is protecting millions of computers around the world. It offers a detailed interface with all the features and tools in one place and yet is simple enough for easy use and configuring.
One thing you'll be aware of when you download it is AVGs constant reminder to pay for the professional program. But it does this without getting in the way of the program's goal of protecting you from viruses.
Avira
Avira like many other top antivirus software programs has a variety of security products for its different customer types. And then it has the free version which allows you to use it indefinitely and to test its features.
There's nothing to stop you from upgrading to the full antivirus program though, which provides even more protection. But the free version is no light-weight and has been rated by experts as one of the best free programs. It has a simple interface that includes easy-to-understand tabs, events and reports, all in one place.
Avast
Avast is a solid protection program. And like its other security brothers, it keeps your PC free of malware threats like Trojans, viruses and spyware. It doesn't annoy you with constant reminders to upgrade to the full paid version and you can update it each year with the latest version. Avast also cleans your PC of broken files and temporary files that slow it down.

10 Great Free Computer Software Programs and Applications

If you're like me, you're curious about computer software and applications that weren't originally bundled with your computer and find an endless amount of relatively Cheap or Free Software offers online. These are my 10 personal favorites, which are indispensable to me. I've divided them into 2 Catagories: Free Software and Cheap Software.
Free Software and Applications I Love:
Auslogics Registry Defrag and Auslogics Disc Defrag - Actually these are two great free software applications - I've cheated and counted them as one! Auslogics Registry Defrag quickly compacts and optimizes your computers windows registry by removing extraneous gaps and wasted space which can greatly improve computer performance. Auslogics Disc Defrag quickly speeds up your computer and eliminates crashes by defragmenting the file system.
Belarc Advisor builds a privately detailed profile of your computers software and hardware along with missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, and Internet Security benchmarks. The results are displayed on your web browser. All of your profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.
Mike's Marketing Tools Search Engine Rankings offers immediate, online web site rankings in 8 top search engines and web directories, including Google, Yahoo! Search, MSN, AOL, AltaVista, AllTheWeb, Yahoo! Directory, and Open Directory (Dmoz). Great for anyone with a website.
Torrent Harvester searches for Torrents on multiple websites and compiles them on a single list. Torrent Harvester works similar to Google but is for Torrents only. If you right click a torrent on the list for certain torrent websites, the torrent will download without you having to leave the page.
VLC Media Player - I prefer VLC Media Player to Windows Media Player as it seems to play more multimedia formats (without adding more codecs)and for some reason seems to sound better on my computer as well (maybe this is my imagination!). VLC is a cross-platform media player supporting a large number of multimedia formats needing additional codecs. Features include video on demand and on the fly transcoding.
Cheap Software I Love (Under $40):
(ESET) NOD32 - Great anti-virus software that allows your computer to run faster then most computers running anti-virus software because it requires less memory and CPU power, making more room to surf the web, play games, email and more. It offers fast file scanning and product updates and runs quietly in the background while accurately identifying known and unknown threats. It is recognized for having zero false positives. Nod 32 ThreadSense Technology offers great internet protection from threats.
(Uniblue) Speed Up My PC easily ensures your PC is automatically optimized for maximum performance. It increased my broadband internet downloading speed greatly. Its 2008 software currently comes with free Uniblue System Tweaker software which speeds up start and shut down times and makes windows more stable and secure.
(TuneUp Utilities) 1-Click Maintenance quickly cleans up your registry and hard drive with one click. 1-Click Maintenance is part of this software and is the basic application I use from it.
(Webroot) Window Washer erases traces of websites you visited, cleans up your cache for browsers like IE, Firefox, Opera and more and removes extraneous files which slow down your computer speed.
(Rarlab) WinRar Is the perfect software for me to open up ZIP, RAR, CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, TAR, GZip, UUE, ISO, BZIP2, Z and 7-Zip files. It is fast and great for multimedia files and automatically recognizes and selects the best the best compression.

Bitdefender Total Security 2013 Review

Bitdefender Total Security 2013 is BitDefender's new top of the line security product that leaves little to be desired in terms of functionality that it provides. It combines all the offerings of the company's Antivirus Plus and Internet Security products with additional features that only it offers.
If you are already a Bitdefender customer you are probably wondering what the company is offering in terms of new features or improvements in their 2013 lineup. We are going to look at that in detail later on in the article. Before that, lets take a look at the installation of the program first.
Installation
You download a small setup program from the Bitdefender website that downloads the remaining data from the web during installation. The installation is straightforward and no problem even for inexperienced users. If you want, you can customize the location on the local drive, enter proxy settings, or disable program modules that you are not interested in. If you are only using webmail, you may for instance want to disable the anti-spam module.
The program runs on autopilot by default which makes life really easier as you are not bombarded with dozens of security prompts and alerts right away. If you want though, you can disable autopilot to manage every issue and prompt manually.
The main program interface displays the four important areas antivirus, antispam, privacy and firewall by default, with Tune-up, Safebox, Update, Safego and File Encryption available either with a click on the right arrow or the slider that is displayed below the listing.
You can rearrange the display with a click on the all modules button in the interface. Here you can modify it so that the four program modules that you are most interested in are displayed without scrolling.
Most modules display an on and off switch on the screen which you can use to either turn them on or off completely, or to turn of some of their automatic functionality. Here it is for instance possible to turn of the automatic scanning of files or the firewall.
Often used features, like scanning or updating, are available directly from that interface as well. Lastly, the settings are also only a click away from the main interface.
At the top, you see the general state of security of the system, events that require your attention, the autopilot switch, and a link to program settings overview

Latest Version for Kaspersky Internet Security

Before starting the installation process of the application files, Kaspersky Internet Security checks the presence of the more recent application on the updates server of Kaspersky Lab. If the servers of Kaspersky Lab do not host a more recent version, then installation wizard of the current version is launched.
If the update servers host a more recent version, you will be invited to download it and install it on your computer. It is advised to install a new version of the Kaspersky Internet Security application, because more improvements are made to the new version. These improvements make it possible to protect your computer in a more effective way. If you refuse to install the more recent version, then installation wizard of the current version will be launched. If you decide to install the new version, the files of the distribution will be copied to your computer and the installation wizard of the new version will be launched automatically.
Before installing the application, the program checks if the operating system and the packages of updates installed correspond to the configuration necessary for the installation of Kaspersky Internet Security. Additionally, the application checks the presence of the configuration necessary as well as the privileges for the installation of the software. If one of the enumerated conditions is not filled, a message of notification will appear.

Many people do not realize that Internet browsers, as well as many other software products, store information about what they have been doing on their computer systems. Anyone can simply turn on your system and see exactly what you have been doing on your computer. Also, the tracks that are left behind can take up large quantities of valuable hard drive space. Recovering this space can be very beneficial by improving the overall speed and performance of a computer.
Cleaning up the history of your activities can be a tedious chore of manually removing each history file or entry. If privacy and disk space are to be maintained, this process must be performed every time you use your computer. Window Washer can automatically clean up your browser's cache, cookies, history, recent document list, and much more! Window Washer can run in the background and clean up your tracks when you are done surfing the internet or any other time you choose.
Acronis Disk Director (Acronis)
Acronis Disk Director Suite is disk partitioning software that allows you to automatically or manually resize, copy, and move partitions without losing data. It also lets you reorganize the hard disk drive structure and optimize disk space usage. Acronis Disk Director Suite provides a powerful, reliable, and easy-to-use way to manage booting of multiple operating systems on a single PC.

Tips and Secrets for Faster Internet Speed

If you want to surf the web and download/upload faster, while this isn't going to be a revelation to anyone, you need to have Broadband Internet Service (such as a Cable, DSL or "T1 or T3" connection). If you have telephone modem service, forget it Jack- you lose, you'll never get fast internet speed ever, you can't squeeze blood out of a stone!
So to pass "Go", step 1 is to get Broadband Internet Service! Of these, usually a "T" line is the fastest and most expensive and "Cable" and "DSL" both have their pluses and minuses. I have Cable Internet Service which is quite fast and the pluses are your connection is by cable rather than a phone line. The negatives are the more people using the Cable line at the same time will slow down your internet speed. With DSL which is also fast, you are using a phone line but are not affected by the amount of people on DSL at the same time. Basically it's your call for which service is best for your situation. Before I go on, factors like the amount of memory your computer has, the processor speed and the hard drive space, could affect internet speed to a degree and I'd try especially in regards to memory and processor speed, to get the maximum you can afford.
Even though you have Broadband, you still might not be happy with your internet speed because: 1. Your cache is too large, 2. You have adware/spyware/viruses on your computer, 3. Your modem needs rebooting, and 4. You don't have an internet speed accelerator. I'll now go over what to do on each of these:
In the case of your cache being too large, it could slow down your speed and I recommend you get software that clears the cache on your internet browser whether it be Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc. The software I recommend is (Webroot ) Window Washer. I would use this software daily but do not have your browser window open when you do. This will clear your cache.
Adware/Spyware and viruses definitely can slow your internet speed down. I would get a decent anti-spyware/adware program to get this stuff off your computer and run it every few days. I would have a decent anti-virus program as well and scan for viruses at least weekly. Note, if you go to Porn sites and some MP3 download sites, your computer will in all likelihood pick up spyware/adware, so ask yourself if it's worth it because chances are your internet speed will be affected. I'd recommend you use (Webroot) Spyware Doctor and/or (PC Tools) Registry Mechanic to get rid of this stuff and also NOD 32 for your anti-virus software, as it doesn't slow down your internet speed and computer like some other anti-virus programs do. I would try to avoid most Internet Security Software as they tend to slow down internet speed as well.
Every so often, your internet carrier for some reason loses a connection on your modem and when they resume for some reason your internet speed runs slower. When that happens, you need to reboot your modem. Just unplug the power cord for about a minute and then reconnect it to the socket. Your modem will reboot and the speed should be back to the way its suppose to be.
Lastly, I would get internet accelerator software. This software maximizes your computer's settings for faster downloads and internet response. I actually use two programs for this: Ascentive ActiveSpeed and Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC. I run ActiveSpeed first and SpeedUpMyPC right after. I run both programs after I've rebooted my computer or when I've added or deleted software programs.
